Although English is a Germanic language, more of its vocabulary comes from Latin and French than from German. The language’s core vocabulary and grammar are Germanic in origin, but nearly two-thirds of English words are ultimately derived from Romance languages.
In addition to French and Latin, English has also absorbed words from Greek, Old Norse, Arabic, and many other languages. These mixed origins make for a heady brew, giving English a versatility that few languages possess.
